When I try to play Fallout: New Vegas, the first save (auto save) freezes at the same spot.?

I have a second save that is further back in game, and that one loads and is playable, but the save that I was currently using freezes at the same spot. I tried cleaning the disk, and restarting the game system (X-Box 360) several times. Why won't the save work?
